3.3 Information Literacy

Welcome to the Louis Riel School Division’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) 2023-27 action pages. For each strategic action, we are diligently taking steps to achieve our goals. Together, these goals strive to create the best possible educational environment for students, staff, and community. On these pages, you will find answers to two key questions: What have we done so far? And where do we plan to be by 2027?

What have we done so far?

  • Developed a framework document for teaching in LRSD, addressing AI as an entity that is here to stay, through a high school mentorship program.
  • Developed a plan for implementing a learning framework for teachers related to online safety in the context of Kids in the Know programming – collaboration with C3P.
  • Explored the inquiry question, “What does an information literacy continuum and curriculum look like that engages staff and students and promotes collaboration with the teacher-librarian?” in participation with a cohort of 12 experienced teacher-librarians representing K-12 schools across the division.
  • Defined “information literacy” as a teacher-librarian team by reading and analyzing current articles, exploring existing frameworks, and connecting these insights to Manitoba provincial curricula.
  • Divided the teacher-librarian team into three working groups to identify essential information literacy competencies that develop from Early Years through Middle Years and into High School, with an emphasis on promoting safe and healthy online behaviors.
  • Engaged all LRSD school library personnel in professional learning related to AI during specialist PD time, covering topics such as Microsoft’s AI innovations, managing and evaluating information, distinguishing real and AI-generated content, and citing AI-generated materials.

Where do we plan to be by 2027?

  • Drafted a preliminary version of a K-12 information literacy continuum for feedback from the Supervisor of Library Services, with completion planned by June 2025.
  • The leadership potential of teacher-librarians as instructional partners in implementing the new information literacy continuum described in Action 3.3 is evident division-wide.
  • Teacher-librarians engage in collaborative teaching to embed information literacy skills into instruction.
  • Teacher-librarians advocate for the acquisition of information literacy skills as essential education for students and staff.
  • Teacher-librarians' work addresses the challenges of navigating a vast and precarious information landscape, increasingly filled with misinformation and disinformation.
