3.2 Student Voice & Agency

Welcome to the Louis Riel School Division’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) 2023-27 action pages. For each strategic action, we are diligently taking steps to achieve our goals. Together, these goals strive to create the best possible educational environment for students, staff, and community. On these pages, you will find answers to two key questions: What have we done so far? And where do we plan to be by 2027?

What have we done so far?

LRSD has articulated a vision for inclusive programming so that almost all students regardless of needs or abilities can access their programming in their community school. To make this happen, certain changes have been implemented:

  • GSA
    • Meets regularly to discuss key issues, share experiences, and take action on divisional priorities
  • Student Advisory
    • Meets regularly to identify and discuss important issues
    • Provides feedback and guidance on divisional practices and policies.
    • Provided feedback on the draft Policing in the Context of Schools Policy
    • Provided feedback on the Cell Phone Policy
    • Provided feedback on the Accessibility Policy
  • Appointed two students to sit on the divisional Accessibility Committee, contributing their lived experiences and perspectives.
  • Centering student voice in the individualized planning process for those who benefit from targeted supports.
  • Actively involving students in conferences with caregivers, focusing on celebrating their accomplishments and co-creating plans for growth.
  • Employing a variety of strategies in each school within the division to enhance student agency:
    • Forming student leadership teams, clubs, advisories, and extracurricular opportunities.
    • Integrating student voice in planning processes at the school level.

Where do we plan to be by 2027?

By 2027, we aim to build on our current successes and further strengthen student voice and agency through the following goals:

  • Implement a consistent, division-wide process for individualized student planning that prioritizes and embeds student voice.
  • Ensure students are active participants in goal-setting, reflection, and planning for their learning journeys.
  • Expand opportunities for diverse student voices to be represented on all divisional committees.
  • Prioritize representation from underrepresented groups to ensure equitable participation.
  • Enhance the role of student leadership in decision-making processes at both school and divisional levels.
  • Support more students in taking leadership roles in areas such as policy feedback, strategic planning, and program development.
