Windsor Park celebrates culture

The diverse cultures and heritages that together weave the fabric of the LRSD community were on proud display at Windsor Park Collegiate’s Cultural Gala on May 31, 2024.

The student audience huddled around the edges of the gym as participants of the talent and fashion shows line up, ready to brave the eyes of their peers to celebrate the more than 50 cultures represented at Windsor Park Collegiate.

First, the talent show. One student danced a more traditional Indian dance; another group performed a Bollywood-style number, complete with a mid-dance sunglasses reveal. Two students whirled around, letting their blue and white dresses flow in wavering loops around them during a Columbian dance. There were musical performances in Ukrainian and Tagalog, and so much more.

Next, the fashion show. The lights dimmed, and students worked the spotlight in an upper level of the gym. Students strut down a runway etched out in LED floor lights, hamming it up for the audience with a pose at the end.

And after each and every performance, and throughout the fashion show, the audience hooped and hollered with nothing but enthusiastic support.

“It’s really great to see kids come and show pride in where they come from,” said Denise Miller, one of the staff and students who helped organize not only the lunchtime Cultural Gala, but a whole month of events, including screenings of films from around the world, art sessions featuring forms such as henna and origami, and sharing cultural stories.

This is the third year the school has held the gala and the second year that included a full month of activities.

“It’s continuing to grow each year. And it’s just exciting to see how much the kids get excited for it,” Denise said.

Gala MC Shafia Razzaq was ecstatic the event.

“I just love all the hard work put into it and seeing the smiling faces and everybody embracing their cultures,” Shafia said. “It was really amazing, and I’m so impressed with everyone cheering for people or people coming in their outfits and embracing this part about themselves. It means a lot.”

To all the students and staff who participated or cheered on those who did, congratulations on a fantastic event!
