Seed Survivor at ÉSCS

Our staff is always looking for authentic learning situations that provide our students with hands on activities that engage students in their learning.  During the month of April, our Grade 3/4 English students and Grade 3 French Immersion students participated in Nutrien’s Seed Survivor Mobile Classroom. Seed Survivor is a free, curriculum-based, interactive learning experience that teaches children how to grow healthy plants and where their food comes from.

Our students began their session with a presentation about plants and soil. Then they progressed through various interactive stations such as planting a sunflower to take home, digging for fossils, learning about what products and bi-products come from farms and the components of soil. They also had an opportunity to go inside a 36-foot trailer to explore multi-media and virtual reality games, interactive activities, talking walls and much more.

After the session, students left with an understanding that plants need water, light, healthy soil and nutrients to survive. They also learned about where their food comes from and the importance of agriculture to their daily lives.
