Strategic Action 1.3: Reinforce trauma-responsive practices.
Welcome to the Louis Riel School Division’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) 2023-27 action pages. For each strategic action, we are diligently taking steps to achieve our goals. Together, these goals strive to create the best possible educational environment for students, staff, and community. On these pages, you will find answers to two key questions: What have we done so far? And where do we plan to be by 2027?
What have we done so far?
A committee of School and Classroom Supports teachers, clinicians, and principals have been meeting over the past year to develop a professional learning framework for trauma-responsive practices. As part of their work, the committee has done the following:
Committee Research and Learning
- Began establishing outcomes and phases for professional learning in trauma-responsive practices.
- Compiled existing content to construct a professional learning framework targeting these outcomes.
Framework Design and Outcomes
- LRSD has centred its work related to supporting newcomer students on the Ethic of Hospitality (as outlined by Dr. Claudia Ruitenberg), to ensure all students and families feel a sense of belonging and safety.
Adoption of Intervention Models
- Collaborated with Staff Services to explore trauma-responsive intervention models.
- Adopted the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model from Cornell University as the division's trauma-responsive intervention model.
Training and Implementation of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
- Between January and May 2025, divisional staff members, including SCST teachers, clinicians, and school representatives, will undergo TCI trainer training during the 2024-2025 school year.
Where do we plan to be by 2027?
Development of a Unified Professional Learning Model
- Develop and implement a comprehensive professional learning model to establish common language and approaches across the division.
- Align the model with and complement the outcomes of the TCI training.
TCI Training Implementation
- Conduct three-day TCI training sessions for all EAs, School Administrators, and Student Services Teachers, led by divisional trainers.
- Deliver one-day TCI training sessions for all remaining school staff, including secretarial and custodial staff, led by divisional trainers.
Sustainability and Certification
- Establish a plan for maintaining trainer certification and conducting regular reviews of TCI practices for all staff.
