1.4 Indigenous Languages

Welcome to the Louis Riel School Division’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) 2023-27 action pages. For each strategic action, we are diligently taking steps to achieve our goals. Together, these goals strive to create the best possible educational environment for students, staff, and community. On these pages, you will find answers to two key questions: What have we done so far? And where do we plan to be by 2027?

What have we done so far?

  • Kindergarten and Grade 1 classes receive Indigenous language instruction twice per cycle for 30 minutes.
  • The curriculum for Grades 2 and 3 is under development. (A draft of the Grade 2 curriculum is expected by the end of the 2024-25 school year.)
  • High school Indigenous language programs are in place at two schools, Dakota Collegiate and Nelson McIntryre.

  • Staff have received training on the "Moe the Mouse" Indigenous language framework.

  • Kits and resources are being implemented in various ways.

Where do we plan to be by 2027?

  • Include all kindergarten to Grade 4 classes in the language program.

  • Establish high school Indigenous language programs in all high schools.

  • Complete our objective to introduce Indigenous Language Nests for preschool-aged children in our family centres.
