The Schools of Choice initiative facilitates parental/student choice, within limits, in selecting the public school best suited to the student’s learning requirements.

These requests for transfers are considered at the School of Choice based on provincial guidelines, which state that schools enroll students in the following order of priority:

1. Students designated to attend that school
2. Students residing in the Louis Riel School Division
3. Other Manitoba students

Acceptance is also based on school population, available space and resources following our divisional process, excerpts of which appear below:

APPLICATION PROCESS

School of choice requests are accepted for the next school year between February 1 and May 15. 

Accelerated Schools of Choice process

In the following situations where school catchment areas are changing, families that wish for their child to continue at their current school rather than be reassigned may apply through an accelerated Schools of Choice process. 

• Students attending Shamrock School or École Guyot who reside in Sage Creek
• Students attending École Van Belleghem in Kindergarten to Grade 7 who reside in Bonavista or the portion of Island Lakes south of Warde Avenue
• Students attending Collège Béliveau in Grade 7 who reside in Sage Creek

The typical process is described here. The accelerated process will follow the same steps but run from February 1 to March 15 instead of May 15. Where Schools of Choice applications are approved, families will be required to provide transportation to and from school. You will only need to complete the application once, if accepted; you do not need to reapply annually.

Parents must apply to potential receiving schools by completing, signing and submitting one of the following application forms for admission to a School of Choice:

Within Division

Kindergarten to Grade 8

If a student wishes to attend a school other than the designated catchment school within the same school division, please fill out, sign and submit a School of Choice Within-Division application form to the designated catchment school no later than May 15. The application form is available for download below or at the school division/school administration office. 

School of Choice within LRSD – K- 8

 Grade 9 to 12

If a student wishes to attend a school other than the designated catchment school within the same school division, please fill out, sign and submit a School of Choice Within-Division application form to the School of Choice no later than May 15. The application form is available for download below or at the school division/school administration office.

School of Choice within LRSD – 9-12

Out of Division

If a student wishes to attend a school in a school division/district other than the home school division, please fill out, sign, and submit a single copy of a School of Choice Out-of Division/District application form to the potential “receiving” school no later than May 15.

Four signed copies of the form are no longer required.

 A hardcopy of the form may be dropped off or mailed to the school office or a softcopy may be submitted using the tool on the website. Note that forms will be date-stamped upon receipt and processed in accordance with provincial guidelines.
