Note that this is not a school event, and students and families will register and get to the event on their own.
Description:
The ACMP in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts- University of Manitoba, University of Manitoba Black Alliance (UMBA), Red River College and University of Winnipeg will host one of its most popular annual Black History Month programs. This event will celebrate the Black African Diaspora community in Canada and pay homage to the great accomplishments of the Black African Diaspora people throughout history, leading to the present. The event will involve panel discussions, Black business showcases, Bursaries for Black African Diaspora students (secondary and post-secondary Winnipeg students), recognition for trailblazers in the Black African Diaspora Winnipeg community and much more.
Black History Month is a time to reflect on the rich and diverse contributions of Black Canadians to the social, political, cultural, and economic fabric of the nation. From the early settlements of African-descended peoples to the ongoing advocacy for racial equity and justice, the Black community’s legacy in Canada is one of resilience, innovation, and leadership. While historically underrepresented, Black Canadians have played pivotal roles in shaping the country's identity, advancing civil rights, and enriching its culture through art, business, politics, and activism. Recognizing this heritage is not only a celebration of history but also a call to action to amplify Black voices and foster opportunities for future generations. This commitment underpins this year's theme, “Empowering Voices: Amplifying Black Narratives in Leadership.
This year’s Black History Month celebration in Winnipeg centres around the transformative theme: “Empowering Voices: Amplifying Black Narratives in Leadership.” Building on last year’s focus on Black-owned businesses, this year we shine a spotlight on the critical role of representation in shaping politics, driving activism, and enriching storytelling.
This celebration acknowledges the impactful work being done by Black individuals across all areas of endeavour—leaders who inspire change, storytellers who preserve culture, and activists who pave the way for progress. By amplifying these voices, we recognize their contributions, celebrate their achievements, and spark meaningful conversations about leadership and representation in our community.
ACMP’s goal for each Black History Month is to celebrate the current and historical achievements of the Afro-Caribbean Black Community in Manitoba.
We will help to facilitate the inclusion of high school students to attend the event by assisting in promotional material and marketing.
