Louis Riel School Division Celebrates UNESCO's 25th Anniversary of International Mother Language Day

Every year on Feb. 21, communities worldwide celebrate International Mother Language Day, recognizing the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the role language plays in shaping identity, safeguarding cultural heritage, improving education, and fostering more peaceful societies.

In 1999, UNESCO proclaimed International Mother Language Day to preserve and nurture mother languages to foster mutual understanding and respect. Research indicates that students who maintain a strong foundation in their first language often develop stronger literacy skills in additional languages. Recognizing and valuing the diverse linguistic backgrounds of our students is integral to building an inclusive and enriched learning environment.

In the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD), we are proud to champion multilingualism through our commitment to supporting multilingual learners (MLLs), reclaiming Indigenous languages, and promoting heritage and international languages.

LRSD’s dedication to linguistic diversity is reflected in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP), particularly through three strategic actions.

Strategic Action 1.4 focuses on introducing Indigenous Language Nests for preschool-aged children and expanding Indigenous language curricula from Kindergarten to Grade 12. This initiative aims to preserve and revitalize Indigenous languages, ensuring that young learners grow up with a strong connection to their cultural heritage. Already, Kindergarten students receive regular instruction in Indigenous languages, with the program set to expand in school years to come. Strategic Action 1.6 promotes and supports teaching one or more of the languages currently offered in Manitoba schools and the teaching of languages spoken in our community but not yet offered in Manitoba. (Read more about what has been done and what is in the works for this strategic action here.)

Strategic Action 3.4 is dedicated to supporting multilingual learners by developing a framework that values and develops students' first languages while helping them become proficient in English and French. This approach not only enhances language skills but also fosters a sense of belonging and cultural pride among students. By focusing on the strengths of multilingual learners, students gain the confidence needed for further success. In alignment with UNESCO's mission, LRSD is taking concrete steps to create a more inclusive and equitable educational environment. Efforts to promote linguistic diversity and support multilingual learners also reflect a broader commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

As we celebrate International Mother Language Day, LRSD reaffirms its dedication to nurturing a rich tapestry of languages and cultures within its schools, ensuring that every student feels valued and empowered.
