Lest We Forget
Last week, schools across the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) observed Remembrance Day and Indigenous Veterans Day through various learning activities, ceremonies, and reflections.
Students of all ages participated in activities that deepen their understanding of the historical significance. From learning about Canada's role in global conflicts to discovering the lives of local veterans, students are given a lens into the personal and collective sacrifices that have helped shape our nation.
In some classrooms, students created poppy displays and other art projects that reflect themes of remembrance and peace. Some classes have also engaged with guest speakers, including veterans, who bring personal narratives to enrich understanding.
On Nov. 7 and 8, many LRSD schools hosted ceremonies that included moments of silence, the playing of “The Last Post,” and student-led readings or reflections. These ceremonies create a space for collective remembrance, allowing students and staff to come together in gratitude and reflection.
By recognizing Indigenous Veterans Day alongside Remembrance Day, LRSD schools are helping students understand the importance of inclusion and the diversity of perspectives that have shaped Canada’s past.
LRSD remains committed to supporting these vital learning experiences, ensuring students understand the importance of remembering the past and working toward a more peaceful future.
