Student-led Generosity at École George-McDowell: Collecting Tabs for a Wheelchair

In the fall of 2023, Laila Jajetovic, a grade 7 student at École George McDowell, wanted to share an idea with the school administration. “Can we collect pop tabs for a wheelchair?” Right away, students and staff engaged in this student-led initiative which allowed us to fill almost 3 18L water jugs. Laila created the poster placed on the bottle near the office and invited friends to join her at lunch time to visit each class collecting tabs. Staff and students also made extra efforts to remove the tab from their cans and bring bags of them to school, including Laila’s family!

Laila and her dad are dropping off all the tabs at Trailblazers Life Choices on Autumnwood Drive.

They will then be donated to purchase and provide a specialized chair for Kyrie, the 2024 recipient of the Tabs for Wheelchairs Campaign on June 19th

Congratulations to Laila on leading the school community to come together and create concrete and positive change for our community. Bravo et merci, Laila!IMG_3277.jpg
