From the music room

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our music classroom is a place where creativity and imagination come together, fostering both growth and learning in countless ways.

One of the greatest joys I experience is listening to students integrate their knowledge and experiences—each in their own unique way—when they share what they know, wonder about, or love most about making music. The little surprises that emerge each day are especially delightful, often appearing when we least expect them. For example, a class might stumble upon the perfect ending to a song while experimenting with the final chords, or we might accidentally create a bridge that also works as an introduction. These moments of discovery go beyond just learning notes and melodies; they reflect the beauty that children bring to music and help strengthen their composing and improvising skills.

Together, we continue to explore the many qualities of sound as we compose lyrics, analyze melodies for folk dances, or create musical landscapes to illustrate poems and stories. It’s incredible to see how subjects like math, science, literature, and even grammar naturally intertwine with music-making, enriching our learning in unexpected ways.

Our students love being surrounded by our many beautiful instruments! Something else they enjoy (and I do, too!) is catching me when I sing the wrong words or ask them to repeat a melody in the wrong place. I treasure these moments because they show how deeply the music has become theirs—once something finds a place in their hearts, it must be honored and played just right!

Music class is more than singing, dancing, and playing—it’s about learning together. Camaraderie, respect for our environment, and a sense of community are essential as we make music safely, share ideas, and strive to do our best each day. I’m always in awe of our students when I see them sharing an instrument, helping a peer, or encouraging a classmate who is presenting an idea.

Honoring and practicing our French vocabulary remains a priority, as we encourage students to imagine, listen, share, and grow—not only as musicians but also as ambassadors of the joy that music brings.

Thank you for your continued support.
