LRSD literacy team leading the way

LRSD was recently recognized in the Winnipeg Free Press for its leadership in evidence-based early screening and literacy intervention, aligned with MYSP Action 2.3. This initiative began in fall 2021 with the implementation of the CTOPP-2 screening tool. Since then, a dedicated team has refined screening and monitoring tools, developed professional development models, created PowerBI data dashboards, collaborated with the University of Toronto to analyze LRSD data, and expanded tools for French Immersion programs.

As a provincial leader, LRSD’s work has been featured in national journals and workshops. While progress continues, it’s important to acknowledge the achievements so far.

The literacy initiative is currently led by Rob George, Karla Gutierrez, Nicholas Kelly, Kristen McDowell, Geneviève Shyiak, and Lisa Tymchuk, with key contributions from the IS team, particularly Marnie Wilson and Jeremy Bray, in developing data dashboards. Their collective efforts have strengthened the resources, programs, and professional development available to LRSD staff, helping to create more effective and informed literacy instruction for students.

This work would not be possible without the dedication of LRSD teachers, administrators, and educational assistants, who continue to adapt and grow. Changing instructional practices takes time, but staff are embracing collaboration, using data to better understand students’ literacy needs, and engaging in ongoing professional learning. Their commitment is driving meaningful progress that will ultimately enhance literacy outcomes for all LRSD students.

Thank you for all your hard work!
