Building a More Connected and Supportive Learning Environment Together

On Oct. 22, 2024, the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) Board of Trustees adopted Policy GBEF/JICJ: Use of Cell Phones in Schools. This new policy is part of LRSD’s ongoing effort to enhance classroom focus, improve student well-being, and foster environments conducive to effective learning.  

The policy establishes clear guidelines for the use of cell phones during school hours, focusing on the balance between leveraging technology for educational purposes and minimizing potential distractions. The policy states: 

  • Educational Use: Cell phones may be used as learning tools during specific instructional activities under teacher guidance. 
  • Restricted Times and Areas: Use of phones during instructional time is not authorized unless permitted by the teacher for educational purposes.   
  • Local Adaptations: Schools within the division have the flexibility to develop implementation plans that reflect the needs of their communities, ensuring alignment with divisional goals and provincial direction. 

Cell phones are ubiquitous in modern life, but their overuse in schools can lead to disruptions, diminished attention spans, and increased social pressures. LRSD crafted this policy after extensive consultation (first and second feedback summary) with students, families, and staff and reviewing best practices. The overarching goal is to empower students to use technology responsibly while prioritizing face-to-face engagement and meaningful learning experiences. 

Each school within LRSD has communicated its specific implementation plans to students and families, outlining how the policy is being applied in their context.
