HéHo in the Spirit of Reciprocity
In the spirit of reciprocity, Lavallee School and École Varennes engaged in multiple activities to celebrate culture and build community during the week of Festival du Voyageur. Students from both schools learned from each other. They shared their knowledge of history and traditions, deepening their connection to Manitoba’s Métis heritage.
“I loved the dog sled races,” said June, student at École Varennes.
The weeklong celebration featured a visit from the Lavallee student Hoop Dancers and the Leading Thunderbird Singers (Drumming Group), who performed for an École Varennes assembly, sharing their vibrant traditions through music and movement.
“My favorite part of Festival de Voyager was probably the Maple taffy we made in the snow by the fire because I really liked how it tasted,” said Tobiloba, student at Lavallee School. “I also made a lot of new friends from Varennes School and the whole day itself was really fun.”
A day of fun Voyageur games, crafts, and music followed, with students embracing the joyful spirit of the festival. In a meaningful exchange, half of the students from each school spent a day participating in activities in each other’s community, fostering friendships and strengthening the bond between schools.
“I really liked going to Lavallee School,” said Isla, student at École Varennes. “The canoeing activity was lots of fun!”
A special thank you goes out to the incredible leadership students from J.H. Bruns Collegiate, whose enthusiasm and support helped make this event successful. We also want to acknowledge the volunteers and staff at both schools for their dedication and energy, which brought extra joy to the celebrations and created an unforgettable experience for all involved.
