What’s in a Name? Naming Our New French Immersion School Together

The significance of a name is evident in building a strong community and school culture at the new French immersion school serving the Sage Creek and Bonavista communities. Names are more than identifiers; they are the foundation of personal connections and a sense of belonging. By learning and using each other's names, we honour individual identities and foster inclusion and respect. In a school setting, this simple yet powerful practice helps create a community where every student, staff, and family feel seen, valued, and integral to the fabric of our shared educational journey.

As a French immersion school, we aspire to choose a name that embodies the values of the French immersion program—cultural richness, linguistic diversity, and a commitment to global citizenship. We want a name students can carry with pride that reflects their educational journey while being meaningful and accessible to families. By selecting a name that resonates with our mission and community, we create a symbol of unity and aspiration that will guide our school’s identity and inspire everyone who walks through our doors.

Intentionality is crucial in shaping the school's foundation. From selecting a culturally responsive curriculum to designing inclusive spaces that reflect the diversity of our students, every decision matters. Building strong community partnerships, integrating sustainable practices, and fostering open communication channels are vital to creating an environment where every member feels valued and connected. By thoughtfully addressing these elements, we can establish a thriving, inclusive community that celebrates every name and story.

When considering a name for the school, it is important to follow the parameters set out in our divisional policy, which states:

The name(s) considered to name/rename a facility shall meet any or all of the following criteria, or other criteria that the Board may determine:

  • They support the divisional Vision, Mission and Values (see Policy AD – Educational Philosophy: Divisional Vision, Mission, Values & Motto).
  • They respect the values of the community within which the facility is located.
  • They commemorate geographical locations or landmarks, or the history of the community.
  • They commemorate individuals who have made significant contributions to education in the Division or to the community, region, province, or nation.
  • They consider the history of the facility and its intended use, including any unique program or focus (if applicable).
  • They do not derive from commercial or denominational bodies.

We invite you to participate in our ThoughtExchange. This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to contribute your ideas for the school’s name, logo, mascot, and the values we want to build together – creating a legacy that will stand the test of time.
