Addressing Concerns Regarding Books in LRSD Libraries

The Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) is aware of concerns regarding specific materials in our school libraries. We take all community feedback into consideration and remain committed to fostering safe, inclusive, and educational spaces for all learners. LRSD has a clear resolution of concerns process in place to address such matters, ensuring that all voices are heard and that issues are resolved in a transparent, thoughtful, and respectful manner.

Our library collections are curated to provide diverse, educational, and age-appropriate resources that support a wide range of learning experiences and perspectives. The selection process is guided by Policy IJL – Library Resources and Materials Selection and Policy ACH - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “LRSD is committed to anti-oppressive* practices through the identification and elimination of all types of discrimination as prescribed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Manitoba Human Rights Code.” This process aligns with professional standards set by Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning, the Manitoba School Library Association, and Canadian School Libraries

Materials are carefully reviewed by school library staff based on established criteria in Policy IJ – Learning Resources and Materials

  • Alignment with Educational Goals: Resources support curriculum objectives and enrich learning experiences.
  • Age-Appropriateness: Ensuring materials are suitable for the developmental level of the intended audience.
  • Literary Merit: Prioritizing works of recognized quality, relevance, and contribution to literature.
  • Critical Thinking Development: Encouraging inquiry and the ability to analyze different perspectives.
  • Diversity Awareness: Promoting understanding and respect for diverse cultures, identities, and experiences.
  • Variety of Perspectives: Including multiple viewpoints while upholding fundamental freedoms.
  • Canadian Content: Emphasizing materials authored or produced in Canada.
  • Fair Dealing and Copyright Compliance: Adhering to legal standards in the use of intellectual property.

As stated in LRSD Policy IJA – Procedures for the Reconsideration of Learning Resources and Materials, we recognize that any resident of the division or staff member may request the reconsideration of a learning resource used in the Louis Riel School Division. In response to recent concerns questioning the selection of materials in high school libraries, LRSD will apply the policy guidelines for the reconsideration of learning resources to review the inclusion of the materials in question. Any decision to withdraw a learning resource from school or divisional use shall be reported to the School Board Chair by the Superintendent of Schools.

At LRSD, we are dedicated to our mission of supporting learning and growth by offering a variety of perspectives in our educational resources. We understand that not all materials will resonate with every individual, and we respect diverse viewpoints within our community.
