Making St. George More Accessible With Multilingual Signs
The St. George School community is working together to create multilingual environmental signs in and around their school. The signs celebrate the linguistic identities of the school's learners, families, staff members, and visitors.
The signs increase accessibility in navigating the environment. They support all learners in increasing their vocabulary in other languages and serve as a conversation point about language.
There are signs for places — such as the library and community room — as well as things in the environment, such as stationary bikes and water fountains.
Students, family members, staff members, and visitors translate words on the sign into another language, which they can then label with the language they’ve translated it into. Everyone is welcome to participate and engage in conversations around them.
People can see all the beautiful languages represented at their school and discuss various alphabets, writing systems, and more. The project launched the week of student-led conferences, which provided an opportunity for students to partake with their families.
This initiative is another great way to celebrate the diversity and multilingualism within the Louis Riel School Division!
