Celebrating Louise Johnston
Louise Johnston is a well-known community member in the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD). She has proudly served as a school trustee for more than 32 years, first on the Norwood School Division Board, then on the amalgamated board of Norwood/St. Boniface and finally for LRSD. As lifelong residents and graduates from the division, Louise and her family have been active volunteers in both schools and community centres for years.
During her time as a trustee, Vice-Chair and, most recently, Chair of the LRSD Board, Louise’s main focuses included:
· Advocating equal and fair treatment of all students
· Presenting a strong, bilingual voice in providing increased opportunities for all students
· Advocating for the strengthening of vocational and arts programming
· Supporting professional development for all employees of the LRSD
· Pursuing increased provincial government financial support for public education while reducing the burden of higher taxes for constituents
Louise’s leadership and continued dedication to public education led the Board and division through uncertainty, including the COVID-19 pandemic and now-defeated Bill 64.
An avid volunteer, Louise has contributed to many worthwhile causes in a leadership capacity. In addition to Louise’s considerable work as a Trustee, she has been a table officer for the Manitoba School Boards Association (MSBA) and served on the MSBA Pension Trustees committee.
Louise makes supporting education a priority. She strongly believes that education is our most powerful tool for making positive changes in the world and believes that the community must help to educate all children.
"Representing my community as an elected School Trustee has truly been an honour," she said. "I have been a part of the LRSD family since its inception and have had the privilege to work incredibly passionate dedicated people. I wish the newly elected Board much success and thank all LRSD staff and especially the Senior Leadership Team for the countless hours of hard work to make LRSD a great place!"
